Unit Breakdown
For Essay 1 you will practice writing summaries of academic texts (to include in your annotated bibliography) and practice writing an evaluative argument, wherein you will analyze how a text works to persuade its intended audience (rhetorical analysis: 900-1300 words; 2-4 sources, in-text citations and a works cited).
Daily Schedule for Essay 1. Effort for essay 1 comprises 15% of your total grade. For Essays 2 and 3 you will practice two kinds of argumentative strategies (each will be 900-1300 words; 2-4 sources, in-text citations and a works cited). One of these pieces will be a proposal. The other will require you to pursue another argumentative strategy of your choice. You will also produce an annotated bibliography that will contain all the items you researched for writing all three assignments.
Daily Schedule for Essays 2 and 3. Effort for 2 comprises 35% of your final grade. For the portfolio assignment, you will reflect on your writing performances, with the aim to design and forward plans for significant revision. Of the three essays you have written for the course, you will select two to revise. One will require a traditional "alphabetic" revision, the other will require you to revise the writing as a visual argument.
Daily Schedule for the Portfolio assignment. The portfolio comprises 50% of your final grade. |

Success in this course depends entirely on EACH student showing up, on time, having done the work, both inside and outside class, especially regarding your group responsibilities. Consequently, I will assume that you will be prepared for class, on time, and offer productive, frequent, and meaningful discussion and feedback on any texts covered, including your peers’ texts.
|
Required Activities
For each draft you write for a given assignment, you will workshop with your peers. The aim is not so much for you to receive feedback as it is for you to give feedback.
A Membership to You Tube: During Unit 2 you will work collaboratively to stage and practice several arguments on the message board of a You Tube video.
|
Even though we will be working with Google Drive to manage most of your documents for class, you may still need to print some of your writing. In any case, you still need to print and comment on assigned readings.
