The Unit Three Portfolio
In the previous two units, you practiced the skills of summary, rhetorical analysis, research, and argument. In this unit, you will concentrate on the revision of writing you have already done and look at ways to make it more effective through deepening your understanding of context, purpose, audience, the rhetorical appeals, arrangement, and sentence- and paragraph-level matters of style and expression.
While revisiting your rhetorical analysis and documented argument essays, you will work through a revision process that involves designing a two-part revision project meant to challenge and stretch you as a writer. You will prepare a plan for revising two pieces of writing and preparing a final portfolio for grading. Your portfolio will include:
All work should be collected in a pocket folder and arranged the following way:
Evaluation of these assignments: In determining your grade on the portfolio, I will consider the extent and quality of the revisions you have made and the clarity and accuracy of the cover memo, that is, I will be very concerned with how you reflect upon your writing, looking to measure your maturity in handling your revision project with little supervision from me.
Important: Revision is not merely correcting grammar and spelling, and stylistic changes cannot be made without demanding significant changes throughout the paper. Along with your efforts to transform your papers stylistically, revision involves “re-seeing” your work from a new point of view concerning context, purpose, and audience; a transformation in value has occurred where your original particular viewpoint has fused with a larger, wider perspective. If you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate to ask me.
Furthermore, the cover memo and revisions will be graded on your demonstrated ability to take charge of your own revision process. As a vital part of the portfolio and the learning process of this unit, the cover memo will be evaluated primarily on your demonstrated ability to analyze your own writing style and practices.
